Hi to all grad students (and our two undergrads) that will be attending this conference. Emily and I are excited to announce that we will have a full weekend of panels, meals, entertainment, and academic enrichment as we gather together to "redefine the new". We have submissions from students that attend schools all over the country, from Virginia and Tennessee to California and everywhere in between. Thank you to everyone who is working to make this weekend a success.

Those of you not from TTU (from UVA, MTSU, Sul Ross, OSU, ENMU, APU, and UTulsa) will be receiving registration forms by e-mail on February 7th, 2007. Please return them by e-mail or by mail. Checks or money orders for registration fees should be mailed to the address on the form. Please see below blog entry for more info on registration prices.

TTU students will receive similar forms in your school mailboxes.

I want to welcome Ph.D. student Chris Black from OSU, a friend of TTU alum Leslie Starkey's, to our group of GES conference presenters. We're looking forward to meeting you.

To Sarah and our Middle Tennessee State University panel, we really hope to see you here for our conference! It's great to see out-of-state interest in this event.

TTU students, abstracts need to be in by the end of January, but go ahead and let us know a.s.a.p. if you are interested--even if you haven't drafted an abstract yet. Hello, conference goers! I would like to let you know about the updated deadline for abstracts. Non-TTU students need to have abstracts in by Jan. 26th, and TTU students have until Jan. 31st. This conference is geared toward graduate-level writing, study, and research. Our theme invites participants to situate their efforts in ongoing academic conversations in the fields of literature, language, creative writing, and technical communication. Graduate students will demonstrate that their research propels the “new” scholars of today into the academic workforce of tomorrow. This is a conference at which graduate students can discuss their ideas in an encouraging and thought-provoking environment, not only presenting their work, but also integrating it into the new, interdisciplinary, global direction of English studies.

The Graduate English Society welcomes papers and panels from all English disciplines that may address ANY area of literature or film studies, creative writing, linguistics, composition and rhetoric, technical communication, or even professional challenges facing students in English graduate programs. As our theme suggests, we especially welcome work that underscores current trends and issues in English studies, such as:

Cultural studies and interdisciplinary approaches
Race/ethnic studies
Postcolonial or global literatures
Gender studies
Digital humanities initiatives
Book history and bibliography
English studies job markets and professional development matters

Those interested in participating should submit their 200-300 word abstracts no later than January 15, 2007 to Karen Beth O’Dell and Emily Johnson at gesconference2007@yahoo.com.

The e-mail should include the following information:
title of paper
200-300 word abstract pasted into body of e-mail
the applicant’s current academic program or position (M.A., Ph.D., M.F.A., faculty), department, and institution
any special assistance needed
technology or visual aid required for presentation (each conference room is equipped with computers and projectors)
Panel proposals should include the additional information:
each panel member’s name, institution, academic program or position, e-mail address
individual abstracts for each member on panel if available
Applicants will be notified of acceptance when the deadline has passed.

Registration Fees: includes registration, official conference t-shirt, shuttle transportation to/from hotel, entertainment on both evenings, and most meals (including a conference opener cook-out), and awards where applicable.

$50 per attendee (non-TTU students, faculty, community member)
$40 per attendee if coming with three or more from the same school (non-TTU)
$25 per attendee from TTU departments other than English
$10 per attendee for TTU English students and faculty—this fee may be reduced to $5 for t-shirt based on student participation (driving shuttles, chairing committees, and speaking on panels).
